Asumi Nakamura

Hi. I’m Asumi. I’m from Tokyo, and a fourth-year student at University of Tokyo. I studied economics there, and I will start working in April. My company has some offices around the world, so I’m here to improve my English skills, so that I can communicate with people from different countries smoothly.

I love dancing, especially house dance, which has so many steps. I started dancing when I was 12 years old, and I joined the dancing club at my junior high school. Although I wasn’t in a dance club when I was a high school student, I really wanted to keep dancing, and that motivated me study hard for the university entrance exams. I always dreamed of dancing on the stage. After entering university, I joined the dancing club as I had hoped, and I danced almost everyday – sometimes 7days a week! I also worked many part-time jobs, including at a cram school, Burger King, a café, a Beer-garden, a butcher shop, and through  Timee, a Japanese app that matches people with short-term or one-day jobs.

I haven’t studied English very much before, so I really need to improve it before I start working in April. I’m especially not confident in speaking, so my goal here is to talk with as many people as I can! I’d be very happy if we could have fun and meaningful conversations together!

  3. Hi Asumi! I am so impressed by u cuz u are always smiling and look very friendly :) I'm quite curious, it seems that u worked hard to get into UTokyo because you wanted to join its dance club, right? Was it because that club is very famous in Japan, or was it for some other reasons, like having access to more resources? Also, I noticed that u have done so many part-time jobs. Are u doing this to find a full-time job? Is this pattern very popular in Japan, that is, doing many part-time jobs in order to find a full-time job? Hope to hear from u :D.
Btw, thanks so much for telling us the info about Timee!

    1. Thanks for your warm comment! I love you too!

To answer your first question, UTokyo has the largest number of students and a huge variety of clubs of national universities in Japan. I wanted to go a national university because of cost constraints, so UTokyo was awesome for me. However, the main reason for UTokyo was actually the high academic level. I just used the dance club as motivation to study even harder!

As for the part-time jobs, I did them simply because I needed money! I love dancing, but it can be an expensive hobby. It wasn't really about finding a full-time job—I just needed to fund my passion for dance!

    1. I think talking to many people was a huge help for me. To be honest, I wasn't very confident in interviews at first. However, talking with many seniors and visiting alumni really helped me organize my thoughts and learn how to communicate them effectively to others!

    1. I highly recommend working at a beer garden! Since they always need extra staff during summer, the job is pretty simple and the pay is great.
