Sono Tomoka

Hi, my name is Sono Tomoka, and I’m from Osaka, Japan. I’m 19 years old, and this study abroad program in New Zealand is my first time visiting another country. I’m currently majoring in English literature at university.

One of my biggest hobby is music, especially rock. I spend most of my day listening to it—in fact, last year I listened to music for 56,117 minutes. I mainly enjoy Japanese artists such as Spitz, the bercedes menz, and KIRINJI and so on.. Music relaxes me, motivates me, and has become an essential part of my life.

I also love Japanese comedy, particularly manzai. I’m a staff member of the comedy club at my university, where I support performances and events. If you’re interested in music or comedy, I would love to talk with you—I could probably discuss these topics forever!

In the future, I would like to use English in my career. However, I know my current English skills are still developing. I especially want to improve my speaking and writing skills. Through this course, I hope to practice speaking as much as possible and gain more confidence. I am really looking forward to learning with you for a month!

  2. Hi Tomoka! Great to meet you.
Your passion for music and manzai really caught my attention! What a wonderful self-introduction. Listening to music for over 56,000 minutes is incredible!
I have a question: what kind of job are you specifically thinking about for your future? There are so many careers that require English. How about becoming a bilingual comedian? That would be so cool!
Looking forward to hearing from you!

  8. I like manzai too! I definitely watch the M-1 every year! Sometimes I search for manzai pairs that I like. I also love music, especially English songs. I'm not sure how much time I spend listening to music, but I might be evenly matched.
