ZOU Qingyang

Hi everyone, this is ZOU Qingyang from Xiamen, a very beautiful coastal city in China. I graduated from the Business School of Fudan University in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree. After that, I worked in the Strategic Business Department of CMOC Group Limited, a leading global mining company, in Shanghai for more than three years until March 2025. Currently, I am a master’s student at the University of Tokyo, majoring in Human and Engineered Environmental Studies, where I analyze how to reduce accident rates in mining companies, taking into account the impact of artisanal miners and host countries.

One of my biggest interests is traveling. In 2025, after resigning from CMOC and before starting my studies at the University of Tokyo, I used my savings to take my parents on a one-month trip to Europe. We drove through ten different countries, including Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain. Although we encountered many challenges along the way, it was truly an eye-opening experience. I hope to visit Europe again or even live there one day.

As for my future plans, I aim to work in an English-speaking country, especially Australia or New Zealand. That is the main reason why I signed up for this short-term program at the University of Otago — to improve my English and, more importantly, to experience New Zealand society. I hope we can all learn something valuable and enjoy our time here!

  1. Hi ZOU! Great to meet you.
I’m really impressed with your introduction, especially the story about your family trip! If I were your parents, I would be so touched. What a wonderful way to spend your savings!
I have a question: what makes you want to work in Australia or New Zealand specifically? Is it because they are famous for the mining industry?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

    1. Hi Asumi! Thanks for ur question. One of the reasons why I want to work in these two places is that the life here is really chill without so much stress. Also, the gov. truly cares ab their people and provides excellent social welfare. And as you said, Australia is famous for its mining industry, which matches my backgroud. Thus I want to live and work there :D. Hope I have answered ur question~

    1. Hi Tomoka! Thanks for ur question. I'd like to recommend Italy and Switzerland, especially areas around Alps. Swiss is somehow similar to NZ, but is more exquisite. As for Italy, u can enjoy both natural landscapes and cultural landscapes there, which is quite cost-effective. U definitely shouldn't miss these two countries!

    1. Hi Mayu! Thanks for ur question~ That's a long story...This experience occurred on the way from Turin to Geneva. A traffic accident happened on our necessary route so there was a big traffic jam. When we arrived at the intersection where the traffic jam was ab to start, two policemen stopped us and told us to take another route to Geneva. But after going around in a circle, we ended up returning to that intersection. This time the policemen typed an address into our google map so it would be more accurate, then we set off again. But in the end, we still returned to their presence. Speechless!!!!!!! Of course later we asked the locals and it turned out that there was only that one road leading to Geneva. Perhaps those two policemen were not locals and were not familiar with the route :(. Anyway, we decided to spend a night at that small town called Aosta in Italy. It turned out to be a gift from heaven! It located at the foot of the Alps, which is really beautiful and quiet. That kind of shocking feeling is difficult to describe in words, and it feels like there is no troubles in life anymore. U should definitely go there at least once!

  12. Thanks for sharing, Qingyang. When I was a university student, I took a year off from my studies and spent 3 months travelling around Europe in a campervan with my parents. I didn't 'shout' them the trip though. I paid for my flight tickets, but they picked up the rest of the expenses. The trip was an awesome experience. So much natural & cultural beauty to explore!

  13. Hi Zou, I'm so impressed your motivation to keep improving. Why are you interested in your major, or why did you choose the conpany?

    1. Hi Shuta! Thanks for ur question! Actually, at that time, I didn't think too much. I simply chose a major that I was interested in based on my college entrance examination score. The same goes for the job. Among the offers I received, I chose the one that interested me the most. Perhaps my luck was on my side, and I'm very glad with my choice. But of course, making the "right" choice requires a sufficient understanding of one's own thoughts and the accumulation of certain experience. For instance, before starting my formal job, I had internships of no less than three months at six different companies (not like working in a restaurant haha), which helped me clarify what kind of job I wanted to do. Hope the answer will help u somehow~
